ABATE of Ohio, Inc.
(American Bikers Aimed Toward Education)
is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rights,
improving the image, and promoting safe operating practices of Ohio
motorcyclists.
Chairman Yates and members of
the House Criminal Justice Committee:
As an organization dedicated
to making Ohio roadways safe, our 2,500 members work actively towards educating
the motoring public about roadway safety issues regarding motorcycling. As such, ABATE of Ohio, Inc. supports the
passage of HB-128.
Right of way violations can
be devastating to a vulnerable roadway user, such as a motorcyclist. A simple weave into the next lane or pulling
out at an intersection can be deadly.
Current penalties for the offenders can result in a small fine and
community hours. ABATE feels this is
inadequate as many of our members, friends and family have been seriously
injured or killed in this type of crash.
As distracted and inattentive driving has been increasing over the
years, the offenders must be held accountable now.
By increasing the fines,
suspension of driving privileges, and points on the offender’s records, a
strong signal will be sent to the general public that safety must be the
highest priority on Ohio’s roadway.
Funds will be allocated from the increased penalties to fund educational
activities that relate to highway safety.
ABATE of Ohio, Inc. is a
proud a member of the Ohio Right-of-Way Working Group. Working with the American Motorcyclists
Association, Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition (COBAC) and the other
like-minded motorcycling advocacy groups demonstrates the dedication to the
passage of this bill.
House Bill 128 will give our
members a chance to feel a little safer on the roads.
Again thank you for your
consideration. If you have any
